*President s Corner*

Dear Fellow Members and Friends,

I wish You All a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year 2009.

As I look back at 2008, we have completed another year of hard work and happy times at our club.  Now it is time to start the New Year with some more of the same but always striving to improve our service and our entertainment value for our members and our patrons who rent our facilities, which helps to keep us fiscally solvent.

Diana and Tom O’Loughlin have scheduled a fine variety of bands and a varied schedule to satisfy any fickle Polka dancer.

In addition we will be planning a big celebratory banquet to commemorate the 70-th anniversary of the inception of our club. The date hasn’t been set but most likely it will take place after the summer break.

You have elected or re-elected a fine group of eager officers for 2009-2010, many of whom have served the club and the membership to the best of their ability but, as always, we ask for your help and support in making things run smoothly so that we can continue to provide you with more options and more value for what you put in.

David Bonczkiewicz has scheduled at least two big Polka Weekend events for 2009 as you have responded very favorably, in the past, and have brought out your friends and family members to enjoy the great entertainment.

Halina Kosinski, our 2nd VP and our kitchen manager, as always, will prepare a diverse and tasty menu for all our events, which should delight your pallet as well as your pocket book.

The Board of Directors always have a challenge in maintaining the property, stocking and staffing the bar but also in planning and carrying out further  improvements to bring the facility up to today’s standards and expectations.

First; our kitchen is in bad need of major upgrades and creation of more space which is needed to service the numerous functions and rentals. This is becoming increasingly difficult, especially when cooking for a larger group.

The second major project is the roof which would include additional insulation so that the building will be more energy efficient to allow us to make the hall available all summer, for rentals.

We will probably not be able to make these improvements in 2009, as we are still recovering financially from remodeling our washrooms.  However, with good planning, good management, and some good luck, we may be able to get this done in the next two or three years.

This is my vision for 2009 and with the help of our officers and YOU, our members and patrons, we can accomplish these goals by building up our resources so that we can continue our quest of providing the most beautiful and functional setting for your entertainment and dining pleasure.

Your President, Casimir Kosinski

1st VICE PRESIDENT - Chez Falkowski:

I hope that your new year started well. I had a series of frustrating computer and DSL modem problems. Please, forgive me a delay with this issue of Club’s newsletter. On the other hand, it looks that I will have more time as the newsletter editor then I anticipated at the end of this month due to the situation in the automotive industry.

Last December the financial secretary reported the following donors to “remodeling fund”: Zawodny, Jorgensen, Jewell, Falkowski. The list is incomplete.

Well, I would like to go back to a bigger scheme of things. We all remember the martial law imposed in Poland in 1981 by military junta of Jaruzelski. The communist propaganda depicted it as a lesser evil then a soviet military intervention. Some poor souls bought that as “the truth”.  Recently Polish and Russian historians dug out original ”meeting minutes” by the adjutant to the soviet marshal Kulikov, in those days the top commander of the Warsaw Pact. It clearly says that on December 8, 1981, Jaruzelski begged Kulikov to commit the soviet army to an intervention in Poland. He was afraid that if 10 million of Solidarity members walked out on streets in protest he would not be able to suppress a revolt with Polish communist police forces. According to the notes, Jaruzelski was confident that if Solidarity stayed in factories then the police and army forces would pacify factories one by one. Kulikov categorically denied any help and stress that Jaruzelski need to squash Solidarity with his own forces because the soviet intervention is out of question. It is the absolute prove that Jaruzelski and his supporters have been traitors and that is how they will be judged by future generations. They did not have to impose the martial law on December 13, 1981. In the worst case they would loose their lucrative positions in government and communist party. Communist authorities murdered about twenty thousands of the Home Army (underground military during WWII) soldiers in 1950s and carried out shooting of hundreds of demonstrators in 1956 and 1970. That is why Solidarity did not take protests to streets. It was convinced that the communist authorities would repeat shooting demonstrators like ducks as previously with the only difference that this time the casualties will be in many thousands of dead and injured. During the martial law there were about 120 killings of the local Solidarity outspoken leaders by the communist secret police. It is one more prove of the reality of  “evil empire”.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE - Shirley Sztuk:

Albert Tomasik - a lifetime member and president of Pulaski Club for numerous terms, is very ill and we keep him in our preyers wish him all our best.
